Oita Trinita have announced that midfielder Ryo Tokunaga of the University of Tsukuba will join the club for the 2026/27 season (January 2027).
Tokunaga, who is from Chiba Prefecture, is described by the club as a midfielder who is strong in one-on-one defending. He is also capable of creating chances with his distribution after winning the ball and by joining the attack.
Following the announcement, Tokunaga commented:
“I had the chance to train with Oita Trinita twice, and each time I felt more drawn to the club. The players and staff have so much passion, everyone is focused on winning, and you can really feel how much energy the team gets from the supporters. Being in that environment made me want to grow together with this club. The club’s sporting staff also came to watch me play and train many times, and I really felt their passion and sincerity. That made me want to repay the faith they’ve shown in me through my performances, and it was a big part of my decision to join.
“I want my football to give Oita Trinita fans and supporters, and everyone who gets behind us, a lift. I also want to be someone who can bring energy to Oita, a city with the sea, the mountains and such a passionate football culture. I’m really excited to start my career with Oita Trinita. I don’t want to put any limits on myself. I’ll keep pushing myself to become better, move forward with passion and persistence, and always stay true to who I am. Thank you for your support.”
