2017 J.League International Youth Cup – Foreign Team Introductions

Pohang Steelers (South Korea)

Established in 1973 and based in the southeastern city of Pohang, the top team participates in the K League Classic and has won three AFC Champions League titles. Members of the Under-18 team are regularly promoted to the senior squad, and another player will do so in 2018. Both the youth and pro teams prefer passing football and Pohang’s academy program has become a steady fixture in Korean football. In name and truth they are Korea’s number-one club.

Chapecoense (Brazil)

Chapecoense was founded on May 10, 1973 in the western Santa Caterina city of Chapeco. Over 44 years, the club has represented the city’s fighting spirit and decisiveness. The top team plays in Brazil’s national Serie A and has previously won six Catarinense titles as well as the 2016 Copa Sudamericana.

The club’s academy has teams at the U-12, U-13, U-15, U-17, and U-20 levels, with over 200 staffers supplementing the players and coaching staff. Chapecoense’s U-17 team has 32 players and reached the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brazil as well as the finals of the Campeonato Catarinense.

Vojvodina (Serbia)

Following the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1991, Serbia became fully independent in 2006. A number of national team stars came from the former Yugoslavia included Dragan ‘Pixy’ Stojkovic. Founded in 1914, Vojvodina boasts over a century of history and a notable list of alumni including free kick legend Sinisa Mihajlovic. Even today a number of stars in top European leagues have passed through the club’s academy, including Frankfurt midfielder Mijat Gacinovic and Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic.

Serbian youth international Mihajlo Neskovic is amongst a list of players participating in the International Youth Cup who have already made their top team debuts.

Olympique de Marseille (France)

Founded in 1899, Olympique de Marseille have won nine Ligue 1 titles and are known for having turned out a number of French legends including Jean-Pierre Papin. Today they boast Japan national team defender Hiroki Sakai amongst their ranks. Marseille’s academy was well-represented in this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup.
